Book Review: What If It’s True? (Charles Martin, 2019)

An old hymn by Rhea Miller comes to mind as I finish the final pages of this book. It’s called “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” and in the chorus she writes that she’d rather have Jesus… “than to be the king of a vast domain or be held in sin’s dread sway.”

And that’s what this book can do for you: it shows you the path to travel in order to overcome the considerable strength of sin’s dread sway. Author Charles Martin writes, “I don’t care who you are or what you’ve done, there is no chain, no matter how thick, that the truth won’t cut.”

I found the rich and specific prayers included throughout each chapter to be a wonderful resource, able to challenge the hardest of hearts and allowing for personal introspection to align the reader’s thoughts with scripture. Charles Martin writes with the spirit of a trusted teacher. If taken with an open heart, this book can change your life.

“What if it’s true? Because if it is–it changes everything.”

P. S.: This book was Charles Martin’s first non-fiction work. However, his novels are also very good. I would highly recommend Long Way Gone and A Life Intercepted as two of his best.
